1 cup concentrated fruit syrup (preferably raspberry or strawberry)
1-1/2 to 2 cups sugar
1 cup water
1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 cups freshly squeezed orange juice (preferably red oranges)
2 cups ginger flavoured soda (ginger ale, Crodino or Campari ok too)
2 quarts (litres) exotic fruit cocktail (Santal)
1 – 2 quarts (litres) sparkling mineral water
orange, lemon slices
Optional: ice ring (with various whole berries such as strawberries, cherries, mint etc.)
Alcohol: white rum, champaign, etc.
PREPARATION
1. Boil 1 cup water with the sugar for 5 minutes.
2. Add the fruit syrup, lemon and orange juice and let cool.
3. Add the soda, other juices and water. Chill.
4. To keep the punch cool prepare a frozen ice ring using a ring mold with water and inserting various berries. Otherwise float some citrus slices on top and serve the punch with ice.
SHORT HISTORY
The word “punch” originates from the Sanskrit word word meaning “five” and refers to the five main ingredients of this beverage: lemon, sugar, water, tea or spices, alcohol. It was borrowed by the British from India during their colonisation period there.
